Korrektur, 2026

In this work, I take my own body and its deviation from the norm, in the form of a spinal curvature, as a starting point. I collected different depictions of backs with noticeable scoliosis. Korrektur—the title of the work, meaning "correction," a word that implies both improvement and evaluation—is an ongoing series of digital scans from self-help books on scoliosis that I altered with the Spot Healing Brush, a tool in Adobe Photoshop, a program designed to create, edit, and enhance pixel-based images. This brush is used to quickly remove small imperfections such as blemishes, dust spots, scratches, or other unwanted marks. It uses intelligent image analysis to generate the most natural-looking repair by sampling the surrounding area. It primarily relies on nearby image data rather than generating entirely new content. Because of this, and because I deliberately misused the tool on larger areas instead of only small spots, the resulting imagery appears familiar at first glance but reveals itself as unfamiliar upon closer inspection, making the alteration—or deviation—more apparent to the viewer.
